CHAPTER TWELVE

Indie hadn’t felt this many nerves since prom night her senior year of high school. She’d gone with her friends preferring not to go with a boy since the only one she’d ever had a crush on was Michael Whitman and he was going with Heidi, the prom queen Indie couldn’t stand. If there was ever a more opposite girl from Indie, it would definitely be Heidi.

She was mean, judged everyone else, and never had a hair out of place. Indie had mud on her shoes most of the time, threw her hair up in a ponytail because it was easier, and preferred a game of horseshoes to doing makeup any day of the week. Michael apparently liked the girly girls though.

She tried telling herself that was a long time ago and it didn’t matter. Indie knew how to dress up like a girl now. She wore a lot of dresses and spent a few more minutes on her hair than she had back in school. She still would rather play a game of horseshoes or bean bag toss than put on makeup and go to tanning salons just to impress some guy.

She’d given her word to Michael that if he still wanted a date—a friendship date, she reminded herself—after a month’s time, she’d have one with him. She had to give the man props, because he’d hung in there.

Tonight she was meeting him for dinner. He hadn’t been super happy she wasn’t allowing him to pick her up, but he could suck that up. She knew it was a real date, but she was going to pretend as long as she could that it was friendship only.

The fact that her body turned molten anytime Michael was around her meant nothing, or so she told herself. The man was sexy. There was no denying that. When she’d come out the week before and seen Jamie all over him like a leach she’d felt incredible jealousy. It had shocked her.

Indie wasn’t a tease. She never had been. If a person liked someone she felt they should admit it. But that was before this odd relationship she was sharing with Michael. He’d tormented her for years, then ignored her for more years. How was she supposed to just pretend that hadn’t happened? She considered herself more mature than the average person, but childhood feelings tended to stick around.

She sighed as she put on her lipstick and looked in the mirror for a final time. It was even more difficult to stay away from Michael and keep distance when she absolutely loved his daughter. Lucy was a true gem. She made Indie’s day better each time she stepped into the classroom with her mischievous smile and can-do attitude. Indie was shocked that Michael had raised such a phenomenal child.

She shouldn’t have been shocked. She knew Michael’s father, Martin, and his siblings. They were all good people. For that matter, Michael was a good person. She might not want to admit that out loud, but he wasn’t a monster in any form.
